Zuni artist Vince Chavez is a wonderful carver of elephants. He often utilizes natural stones and minerals originating at Zuni such as the Nutria stone specimen he sculpted this approximately 2 7/8" long, 7/8" wide and 1 7/8" tall pachyderm from. Gorgeous crystal inclusions are seen on the hind legs, while sky blue eyes are from turquoise inlays. It is said that elephants are considered to be former human chiefs or ancestors in ancient west African Indigenous beliefs.
