In the Zuni home, pottery bowls similar to this stepped-edge one would be used to store ceremonial Cornmeal. They are known by many names: prayer bowl, cloud bowl and cornmeal bowl. Noted potter Agnes Peynetsa's small prayer bowl is hand built with a sweet three-dimensional Lizard and painted with squiggly tadpoles and water-dwelling Dragonflies, all important animals representing life-giving water. Signed by the artist, this natural clay and pigments pottery is about 4 1/2" long, 4" wide and 2 1/8" tall.
