Protected Horned Lizard
In New Mexico, the squat-bodied horned lizard is protected so it is best to leave them be should one cross your path. It's illegal to remove them from their habitats. The late Terrence Tsethlikai's Picasso marble reptile with turquoise eyes pays homage to these wonderful Lizards who are respected by the A:Shiwi (Zuni) and are associated with the Red Ant Society. Native Red Harvester Ants are a primary food source for horned lizards so we can help them out by not destroying their ant piles. About 2 1/2" long, 1 1/4" wide and 7/8" tall.
