Tablita Owl Pottery

DH Mavapu is a wonderful potter from Zuni with Hopi ties known for his wonderful Owls exquisitely hand-built from natural clay. He studied with noted Zuni artists Phil Hughte and the late Jennie Laate. His latest offering is a Tablita Maiden raptor with beak, wings and tail feathers in three dimensions. The traditional headdress is adorned with pollinating bumblebees. Every square inch of this work is colorful and pleasing to the eye adorned with mostly natural pigments as well as ceramic paints. A wide-eyed expression reminds us that an owl can see what others cannot. Many Zuni homes have a pottery owl watching over them. About 7 1/2" tall, 6 1/4" wide and 4 3/8" deep. Signed by the artist with a corn motif and the word Mu:Shiwi which means Hopi-Zuni.
